From the "laundry conversation" between me, a Germany and a Malaysian neighbors from different units in this tiny so-called apartment, we all agree what type of Australians are most. It is the second one. Not annoying and not too good too to be someone you want to spend your day with. We, the guys who ended up at 2 am in the laundry room, (in Saturday night!) seemed really understand about this very typical Australians. They're just not bothering you. They have their own world. Even, maybe they think that we are not exist! Who are you, baldy with a pug nose and "not so short compared to us" Indonesian guy? Why should we care? But hey, we're in the individualistic society. It is okay then, behaving like that. I myself start to ACCEPT that. Or even, start to ACT like that? Who are you?! Why bother?!
One and a half years is enough to discover more rare type of Australians. The annoying ones. But I guess I'm lucky enough to never really have a bad experience with them personally. It was just one day, when I passed through some kids in Dawson street and they yelled at me: "One dolla one dolla" copying Vietnamese sellers' accent in Little Saigon market in Footscray. Well, that's just my case.
Last week, when I was in tram in St. Kilda Road at night another annoying person showed off. This time was a woman. She annoyed the lady sitting in front of her by saying, "So, you're a Muslim? Why u wear that scarf? Open it! Come on... u're free! this is a free country!" And she kept saying that to the African lady who wears hijab covering her head. I was disturbed.
The African lady was just cool. She responsed wisely. I think that's the best way to react to crazy people like that woman. Just don't do unnecesary action. I was almost at a point which I want to speak up to that crazy woman and tell her that because it's a free country, so she's free to wear hijab as she wants it to be! But i kept in silence. Then the sick lady went off to the back.
What surprised me was the scene after that. There was another Aussie girl sitting like 2 rows in front of me. She said to the African lady something to cooling her down. It was like she tried to convince the lady not to be afraid. Everything's just fine. And that crazy people like her are everywhere. That kind of sympathy from this beautiful girl makes me can breathe longer. That actually good people are also everywhere. Before this nice girl got off from the tram, she came closer to the lady, caressed her gently and cherished her.
Other good guys are also just around me. I meet them every week at RMIT campus during Friday prayer. They are Australians who help Muslim students in RMIT get their prayer room back. Previously, Muslim community in RMIT have their own prayer room. But now, uni just take over the place without any clear reason. Hence, we just pray in the field struggling with cold or heat, shower or wind, and all things that can happen in Melbourne's four season in a day. I don't really follow the background of this "dispute". But what amaze me is the support from other Australian students who are not Muslims. They are in the front line of "the fight". They collect signatures to make a petition against uni. Hey, there are still some people care to others in this individualistic country! Still bother?!
